Chapter 29
Heather
Heather and Rebecca rushed into the cafeteria on Ice Cream Sundae Day, a yearly treat hosted by the hospital to thank the employees for all their hard work throughout the year.
They turned the corner, zigzagging through the congestion of employees, and witnessed the madness. Sprinkles flew onto the floor, whipped cream exploded from the cans, cherries rolled all over the table. You would think dietitians would have more self-control. Samantha and Cara strolled by them with their mile-high sundaes.
Rebecca and Heather made their sundaes and took a seat in the back. Rebecca licked the whipped cream off her spoon and shivered. “You’d think they’d have this in the summer instead of the first week of January.”
“Maybe the ice cream tubs are cheaper the week after New Year’s.”
Rebecca laughed, licking the chocolate syrup from her bottom lip. “Reddi-whip is the most amazing discovery ever. Mmm.”
Heather sucked the maraschino cherry into her mouth. “You know, I used to spray it in my breakfast cereal when I was little.”
“Ew, you did not. The cereal had enough sugar as it was.”
“Then I’d hold up the bowl and slurp the red and blue milk into my mouth.”
“Are you sure you’re a dietitian?” Rebecca giggled. “Actually, I caught my kids squirting it in their mouths one time.”
“Totally. Who hasn’t?”
Silence. “Me,” Rebecca murmured.
“Get out.”
“I don’t know. I just never did. My mom would have killed me.”
“Mine too, but I didn’t tell her. I’m bringing in a bottle of whipped cream on Monday and we’re downing it in the bathroom on Tower-8.”
“You’re crazy. I could just see the two of us walking out of the bathroom together with a bottle of whipped cream. We hang out too much as it is.”
“Good, give them something to talk about. My life’s so boring.” Heather finished her sundae and plopped the bowl in front of her.
“I’m supposed to take my kids to the Children’s Museum in Garden City on Sunday.” Rebecca wiped her mouth on a napkin.
“It’s supposed to snow.”
“I heard rain.”
“Which will turn to ice.”
“Great.” Rebecca dumped her bowl next to Heather’s.
“We have to get the kids together again. They had a blast last time.”
“How about February break? I took the week off.”
“Me too!” Heather practically sprang from her chair. “Let’s plan out the whole week.”
“It’ll be great. It’s so hard trying to keep them occupied in the middle of February.”
“I know. My parents took turns watching Laurel this past week and they’re losing it, even with all her new Christmas toys. Luckily, Gia’s in day care.”
“Can’t Lance take off and watch Laurel?”
“Oh, please, he wouldn’t know what to do.”
“So? You’re enabling him. Tell him your mother can’t do it. Force him. He’ll learn. You do too much and he takes advantage of you. Brad and I split the chores down the middle. He vacuums, does laundry, cooks.”
“Get out!”
Rebecca shook her head. “Why are you allowing it? Why are you letting him win?”
****
Heather scooped the last of her scrambled eggs and ketchup onto the fork and shoveled them into her mouth.
